Stretch Wrappers: Automating Pallet Packaging
Optimizing packaging processes is crucial for efficiency and product protection. Stretch wrappers, also known as pallet wrappers, automate the task of securing pallet loads with stretch film, offering significant advantages over manual methods.
Why Automate Pallet Wrapping?
Switching from hand wrapping to machine-based stretch wrapping provides notable benefits:
- Increased Efficiency: Machines wrap pallets much faster and more consistently than manual labor.
- Improved Safety: Reduces the risk of employee injury associated with repetitive motion and maneuvering around pallet loads.
- Consistent Wrap Quality: Delivers uniform tension and overlap, ensuring better load containment and stability.
- Optimized Film Usage: Many machines can pre-stretch film, using less material per pallet and reducing costs.
Types of Stretch Wrapping Equipment
Stretch wrapping machines come in various configurations to suit different operational needs and load characteristics.
By Operation Type
Semi-Automatic Stretch Wrappers:
These machines require an operator to position the pallet, attach the film to the load, start the wrapping cycle, and cut the film at the end. They are well-suited for operations with low to moderate pallet volumes.
Fully Automatic Stretch Wrappers:
Designed for high-volume environments, automatic wrappers integrate into conveyor systems. They automatically handle pallet positioning, film attachment, wrapping, and film cutting, requiring minimal operator intervention.
By Machine Mechanism
Turntable Wrappers:
One of the most common types. The pallet is placed on a rotating turntable, while a film carriage moves vertically to wrap the load from bottom to top and back down. Ideal for many stable loads.
Rotary Arm Wrappers:
In this configuration, the pallet remains stationary while a rotating arm circles the load, applying the stretch film. This type is particularly useful for wrapping heavy or unstable loads that cannot be easily rotated on a turntable.
Orbital Wrappers:
Also called ringer wrappers, these machines wrap horizontally around a load as it moves through the center of a large ring or hoop. They are typically used for long, horizontally oriented items or irregularly shaped products that need to be secured to a pallet.
Leading Equipment Manufacturers
The stretch wrapping market features equipment from established manufacturers known for reliability and performance. Key brands include Robopac, Cousins, Orion, and Wulftec.
Selecting the Right Stretch Wrapper
Choosing the appropriate stretch wrapper depends on several factors, including your required loads per hour, maximum wrap height, pallet dimensions, load stability, and available floor space. Considering these operational attributes helps in identifying the machine type and model that best fits your specific packaging requirements.
